Il telegrafo elettrico si deve a Samuel Morse, che, negli anni quaranta del 1800, ha ideato il sistema telegrafico elettrico con un filo unico ed un codice speciale, il Codice Morse, che permetteva di codificare le lettere dell'alfabeto in sequenze di impulsi di diversa durata (punti e linee). L'invenzione è stata poi brevettata negli Stati Uniti ed il 24 maggio 1844 c'è stata la prima trasmissione ufficiale tra Washington e Baltimora. Il telegrafo di Morse si è diffuso in poco tempo in tutto il mondo, permettendo di rendere le comunicazioni più semplici. Questa invenzione ha portato anche alla formazione di una classe di operatori specializzati, alcuni dei quali riuscivano anche a digitare il codice Morse ad una velocità di 80-100 caratteri al minuto. In Italia il primo telegrafo elettromagnetico viene introdotto nel 1847 grazie a Carlo Matteucci.
