PLUVINEL, Antoine de (1552-1620). L'instruction du roy, en l'exercice de monter a cheval. Paris: Ruette, 1629.
A copy likely belonging to Philippe de Chieze, the inventor of the saloon carriage (Berline or Berliner Kalesche), which became famous after his master, the Elector of Brandenburg, donated one, fully gilt, to Louis XIV in 1683. It is rare to find a complete copy of this work, one of the masterpieces of horsemanship; Antoine de Pluvinel was first squire to Henry III and in 1594, under Henry IV, he was authorised to establish his own riding school, where he perfected the method of 'dressage'.
Folio, (375 x 245 mm). Engraved title-page on two leaves, 4 portraits outside text, 58 double-page plates, text in two columns in French and German (browning, mainly to text. Eighteenth- century half calf binding, gilt title (wear and losses). Provenance: "PC" and P. Dechieze" (ownership inscription to title-page and half-title) probably Philip de la Chieze (1629-1673) Quartermaster-General for Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg. (1
