PIERRES, Philippe Denis (1741-1808). Description générale et particuliére de la France...Voyage pittoresque de la France. Paris: Pierres, Lamy, 1781-96.
A monumental work, complete with all plates according to the index, conceived by Jean-Benjamin de Laborde (1734-1794) with the assistance of Edme Beguillet (+ 1786) whose editorial vicissitudes lasted for more than 15 years between the monarchy and the Revolution. Although never completed, this work with its 750 views is perhaps the best printed representation of late 18th-century France. The plates were engraved by Masquelier, Malapeau, N?e, Tavernier, Aubigny, and others, after Moreau le jeune, Chenu, Lespinasse, Duch?, Car?me de F?camp and others. A first-class account of Ancien R?gime France.42 parts in 6 volumes, Folio (500 x 330mm). Over 700 views on 490 plates, 4 geographical maps and a folding family tree, 10 mineralogical plates in the second volume. The number of plates corresponds to the general index and explanatory plates in each section. It is to be noted that, like the other copies previously on the market (by Henri Godts in 2013 and by Arenberg in 2020), the XIIIBis plate in volume 4 (Ile-de-France, Valois et comtà de Senli) is missing, probably never produced. (Dampstains to the right margin of the volumes, not touching text or engravings except on rare occasions, occasional mildew staining, more or less extensive). Contemporary full red gilt morocco binding signed P. Bezouard, spines gilt, gilt edges, silk endpapers (defects due to water affecting the binding, especially the endpapers and boards). (6)
