Fine copy with a touching dedication, written in elegant literary Italian by a student of the Royal College of Surgeons to Thomas Chevalier (1767-1824) distinguished professor of medicine (he was George IV's Surgeon Extraordinary) and scholar. On the recto of the first leaf a bibliographical note dated 1805 correctly states that Daniello's commentary had previously been erroneously attributed to Gabriello Trifone.4to, (213 x 146mm). 3 full-page engraved illustrations depicting Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso at the beginning of each canto, large printer's device at the back of the colophon, engraved initials. 20th=century binding in red morocco, title gilt to spine, gilt edges, by Gozzi bookbinders of Modena. Provenance: Long dedication to Thomas Chevalier from D. Durnall (?); bibliographical note to the front of the blank leaves and probable year of purchase 1805. (1)
