MAGGI, Giovanni (1566-1630). [The Ten Basilicas] . Rome: De Rossi, 1651.
Scarce series of finely engraved plates by Greuter based on drawings by Maggi, each illustrating the seven churches that are pilgrimage destinations in Rome with the addition of St. Paul's at the three fountains, the Annunciata, and the Madonna del Popolo. The bird's-eye views of the complexes are framed by nine smaller-format depictions of the altars and the main works of art and worship inside. From the cartouche on the plate of St. John Lateran we learn that this is De Rossi's edition printed in 1651, while the series had previously appeared with a dedication to Christine of Lorraine, Grand Duchess of Tuscany, around 1600, the year of jubilee. A complete set of this edition is in the Vallicelliana Library in Rome and the New York Public Library in New York. 10 loose plates, (430 x 580mm approx.). List of plates: [1] S. Giovanni in Laterano [2] S. Pietro [3] S. Paolo, [4] S. Maria Maggiore [5] S. Lorenzo fuori delle Mura [6] S. Sebastiano, [7] S. Croce in Gierusalemme [8] Le tre fontane [9] L'Anunciata [10] La Madonna del Popolo (fold signs in centre). (10)
