Magnificent edition in an elegant contemporary binding illustrating the artistic and natural splendours of the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily with over 500 engravings by almost seventy illustrators, in the 18th-century spirit of the Grand Tour. Title pages with engraved vignette, copper-engraved dedication to Queen Marie Antoinette, 272 engraved plates and maps, engraved head-pieces and tail-pieces by various illustrators and engravers and protected by tissue paper (leaves slightly browned, occasional light stains, small tear to plate rrr2 of Vol. I, some light dampstains to Vol. II, small tear to leaf b1 of Vol. III, in Volume 3 the 22 pages dedicated to the earthquake in Calabria on 23 May 1783 are bound after page 130). Contemporary calf, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, red silk place-markers (defects to the joints). The plates are divided as follows: first volume 52 plates including 4 maps; second volume 85 plates including 2 maps and a series of over 20 hand-coloured cul de lamps in black and orange.
