If ever there was a car that represented the spirit of a nation, it is the Fiat 500. Created in 1957 as a replacement for the beloved 500 Topolino, the New 500 immediately became one of the symbols of mass motoring. Although it was an economical and good-looking car, it did not immediately meet with the success it had hoped for: the too basic equipment of the first versions and the absence of chrome (at the time an almost indispensable accessory) and too low performance (13 horsepower) made the 500 immediately risk disappearing after its introduction onto the market.
The first series, known as the 'Economica' was soon revised and re-proposed by Fiat with descending side windows and a padded rear seat in place of the austere bench seat. Success was not long in coming and also thanks to Carlo Abarth's elaborations and his speed records, the 500 soon conquered a place in the hearts of Italians. With almost 3,000,000 units sold in almost 20 years of production, the 500 is one of Fiat's most successful cars and one of the best-known and best-loved Italian icons in the world.
Coming from a private collection of an enthusiast from central Italy, this 500 N was acquired by the depositor from its first owner, a gentleman from Perugia. Fully restored between 2014 and 2016 with its original Celeste Crociera 472 tint, this stunning 500 represents an excellent example of an early Fiat 500 in circulation. Complete with its Targa Oro ASI and original equipment engine, it exemplifies the synthesis of minimalism, elegance and Italian character.
