#A FINE AND VERY RARE IRON-RED DECORATED 'BATS' AND SHOU SAUCER DISH, CHINA, QING DYNASTY, MARK AND OF THE PERIOD YONGZHENG (1723-1735)
supported on a short slightly tapered foot, the interior delicately decorated in iron-red with a central medallion with the wufu, 'The Five Bats' or the 'Five Blessings' motif, their wings outstretched and arranged in a circle, surrounding the Shou longevity character, the cavetto skillfully painted with Twelve bats variously in flight, within an underglaze-blue borders of double-circles, the underside similarly decorated with Height bats. The recessed base inscribed with a six character reign mark within a double circles in underglaze-blue; in perfect condition

Five: is the 'Five Blessing or Happinesses', as the most common visual was a circular design of five bats encompassing either the character Shu. Twelve: is symbolize the 'Twelve is the number of Heaven' and therefore there are twelve distinctive symbols that were used by the Emperor to confirm is position as the Son of Heaven, they are known as the Twelve Imperial Symbols. Eight: symbolize the good luck and prosperity and groupings of Height bats represent also the Height Immortals. Bats surrounding a Shou character is a play on words forming the auspicious phrase, wufu pengshou, 'Respectfully offering the Five Blessing'.
