Note: Xiezhi: its ability is to discern truth from lies, and its formidable habit of immediately piercing liars with its single horn, made it the emblem of the special group of court officials known as the Censoriate. There is a Chinese legend that dates back to the Classics, specifically the Book of History, about a Xia Dynasty judge by the name of Gao Yao who had such a creature that was able to detect the guilty from the innocent, known in Chinese as a Xièzhi was a white creature with a dragon’s head, a lion’s body, a bear’s tail, a mane paws (not hooves), and a single horn on its head. We can see this mythical beast along the spirit path leading to the Ming tombs in the outskirts of Beijing.
The Xiezhi sometimes is confused with the other mythical beast, the Qilin, that can be identified by the two horn and hooves and represents a number of positive attributes longevity, grandeur, benevolence, virtue and happiness.
