Built by the Arese company from 1955 to 1962, it was 'inspired' by the Alfa Romeo importer in the United States, 'Max Hoffman' of New York, who asked Alfa Romeo's top management to produce a 'spider' version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint and immediately committed to buying 2,500 examples to offer on the North American market, which has always been very receptive to 'open' versions of sports cars. In 1954, Rudolf Hruska contacted the Turin coachbuilders Bertone and Pininfarina, entrusting them with two chassis each, in order to carry out their proposals for the future 'Giulietta Spider'. Pininfarina's proposal was inspired by the Lancia Aurelia B24, with a sober stylistic approach linked to the Italian tradition for cabriolet cars. The choice fell on the latter to start production of the new spider.
The 'Giulietta Spider' was powered by a longitudinal in-line four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,290 cm³ and a power output of 65 bhp (80 bhp since 1958), which gave the car a top speed of 155 km/h (165 since 1958). The crankcase was in light alloy with cast-iron cylinder liners. The cylinder head was in light alloy, with a spark plug in the centre of the combustion chamber. The fuel system comprised a Solex carburettor, timing system with two valves per cylinder, arranged in a V, controlled by two chain-driven overhead camshafts. Drive was rear-wheel drive and the brakes were four-wheel drum brakes. The front suspension was independent-wheel suspension, with deformable wishbones, coil springs, hydraulic telescopic dampers and anti-roll bar; the rear suspension had a rigid axle, guided by longitudinal arms and reaction triangle, again with coil springs and hydraulic telescopic dampers.
It was produced from 1955 and was an immediate international success. The finish was very accurate. In 1956 they produced the so-called 'first series' ('750 D' series in the 'normal' version and '750 F' series in the 'Veloce' version), it had many different details from the prototypes and pre-series models: modified windscreen, narrower headlamp bezels, descending windows but without deflectors, doors with an inner lining (with visible screws), dashboard still in sheet metal with the upper part in black, glove compartment without a door, two-spoke steering wheel with horn ring and headlamp flashing button with Giulietta Special lettering. In 1957 starting with chassis 1495*02208 the doors were fitted with a fixed deflector. Occasionally, however, until 1959, doors with only the downswept glass were still fitted. A slight restyling with a floor lengthened by 5 cm. Round reflectors were positioned under the rear lights. The engine now had an output of 80 hp. The interior had also undergone some modifications, such as the passenger seat, which could now be adjusted, and a convenient storage compartment that had a flap in this new version.
Today's magnificent example comes to us as a preserved car with signs of its 63 years of life, still with its original first paint of the rare Medium Blue 312 and its original HardTop. The bodywork shows some wear with various areas of discoloured paintwork, some small areas of rust corrosion in the door bases and areas of the body adjacent to the front and rear wheels on both sides. The interior preserved in good condition as is the hardtop.
The well-maintained mechanics are brilliant and responsive, with no rattles or smoke, however it needs a service and a general overhaul, as does the brake system.
Very little used over the years, it has sporadically participated in rallies and events without ever leaving the Province of Naples. The car is accompanied by its original page vehicle registration booklet, complementary sheet dated1984, all revenue stamps paid to date and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta use and maintenance booklet. The reading of the kilometre counter shows the extraordinary reading of 09940 km, also confirmed by the periodic revisions in the logbook for the last 8 years, where the actual sporadic use is evident. Owned by the former personnel manager of Alfa Romeo in Arese and Pomigliano d'Arco.
Pages vehicle registration book, complementary sheet dated 1984, all stamps paid to date. Excellent basis for conservative restoration to have a historic collector's car or a fantastic preserved car to keep intact with all the taste of time gone by, without giving up the elegance of a timeless classic.
