The Fiat 1200 began production in 1957 and was built by the Turin-based company's Special Bodywork Section. The 1200 Granluce was a top-of-the-range version of the 1100/103, of which it retained part of the mechanicals, but the displacement was increased from 1089 to 1221cm³. The load-bearing bodywork remained the same with some cosmetic variations that made it better than the 1100. Horsepower with the 1200 rose to 55, significantly improving performance.
With improved cosmetic finishes, a fine interior and numerous chrome friezes, this new model immediately positioned itself in a better market segment. However, clashing with the success of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the sales figures were not what was hoped for. Derived from the 1200 Granluce saloon. in 1959 Fiat presented two two-seater convertible variants, the 58 hp 1200 TV Spider and the larger 80 hp 1500s, the two models with later variants ended production in 1966 with the extraordinary success of 43,000 units produced.
The 1200 TV Trasformabile found great success in the USA where most examples can still be found today. The magnificent model we are presenting here is part of a large collection of classic cars, and after extensive restoration it is now in such excellent condition that it has been awarded the ASI Gold Plate. It has not been used in the last period and has been stored in the garage, and a complete general overhaul is required before it can roar down the road again. A commercially successful car in its rarest first production run, rare as a model and even more so for its splendid condition.
