[ERUDITE] ARISTOTLE; AVERROES (1126-1198). Aristotelis opera. Venice: Bernardino Stagnino da Trino, 1489.
Incomplete copy but from the libraries of the scholars and Eurydites Jan Gruterius and Friedrich von Grimm of the version of Aristotle with Averroes' commentary. The copy, although very incomplete, is uncut and enriched with numerous contemporary marginal annotations and underlining; according to the first leaf, the volume entered Jan Gruterius' library in 1611, at which point he had already been librarian at the University of Heidelberg for 9 years. Gruterius was an important Flemish Catholic philologist who studied at Oxford and taught in Leiden, Rostock and Wittenberg before finally settling in Heidelberg, where he published most of his studies and versions of Latin authors. The ownership inscription of 1780 is instead by Grimm, a journalist and socialite known for having written from 1750 to 1790 the famous "Correspondance littéraire, philosophique et critique", a report on Parisian life and events sent twice a month to 16 (or 25) princes and rulers of Eastern Europe (including Catherine the Great). Also of note are Grimm's contributions to Diderot's Encyclopedie and his interest in opera, which led him to host the young Mozart for over a year in Paris.
