A FINE PAINTING ON PAPER APPLIED ON CANVAS PREPARING YANG GUIFEI FOR PRESENTATION TO THE EMPEROR, CHINA, EARLY MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)
The painting with ink and colour on paper, applied on canvas, most probably depicting Yang Guifei (1) the legendary beauty depicted in an elegantly draped silk revealing transparent gown, turned in three-quarter profile, with one arm raised and the other down keeping the transparent gown with her close hand, flanked by two young attendants, one gently ventilates with a fan, the other young servant girl bearing a tray with a tripod censer, all up on a fenced terrace embellished with jardinières furniture and objects of art and a banana trees, besides with rocks and a foliate tree enveloping the upper part of a pavilion and the adorned spires of the roof of the imperial palace. A seal on the lower proper right angle. As is common to the painting of this age, the surface with wears and small losses, folds and stains, as visible from the images.

Note: Known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, Yang Guifei, which translates as Imperial consort Yang with Guifei being the highest rank for consorts at the time, was the beloved consort of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty during his later years. One of the known representations of the curvaceous beauty is now in the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Museum, Washington D.C. by Qian Xuan (1235-1305) Yang Guifei Mounting a Horse.
