cm 14,5 high
This unusual wine pot is well modeled in the form of a standing crowing phoenix on a rockwork. Painted in under-glaze blue, the beak and eyes are well detailed as well as the plumage. Looking as a long tail, the provided handle is formed by a hollow, the molded coil detailed with the blue color with a feather-like pattern; the beak, which has a small opening, functions as a spout. On its back there is a short cylindrical-mouth opening with a flat circular cover, surmounted with a finial in the form of a flower bud. The base with a Chinese character or artist mark in under-glaze blue.
Note: this early piece can probably be taken as a prototype for the production of similar animals in the Blanc-de-Chine as well as in the “Famille Verte” and “Famille Rose” export porcelains made during the late 17th century and in the 18th century.
At the Victoria and Albert Museum there is a related phoenix wine pot' in under-glaze blue and white and dated Wanli.1. Bloxman gift, C.150 & A-1928
