Incomplete copy of this scarce work on the ruins of ancient Rome, from the library of Scottish art historian Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, 9th Baronet (1818-1878). A fervent collector, member of the Historical Manuscripts Commission from 1872 to 1878, trustee of the British Museum and the National Gallery. Interestingly, he had an Afro-British brother, Edward Stirling (1808-1873) who was born of his father's union with a slave on his plantations and who became one of the first colonisers of South Australia.2 parts in one volume, (250 x 190mm). 91 plates including title pages (of 107?, light foxing mainly marginal. Second half 19th century binding with Sir William Stirling-Maxwell's motto impressed Gang Forward (some wear to spine and joints). (1)
