[SICILY] COLLURAFI, Antonino (1585-1655). [Le tumultuazioni della plebe in Palermo. Palermo: 1651].
People, scum of the world, who will lead you? (transl.). A very rare work, never before sold at auction, depicting the popular uprising in Palermo in 1647. The people of Palermo, tired of the abuse of power by the Spanish government and the local nobility, led by Giuseppe D'Alesi, succeeded in conquering the royal palace and forcing the Viceroy Marquis of Los Velez to flee, and in organising the city's first autonomous government. However, the revolt was soon violently suppressed by the Sicilian nobility and on 22 August D'Alesi was captured and killed by Royalist forces. Collurafi's account, although on the loyalist side, did not please the local government who found the descriptions of the massacres carried out by the government forces dangerous and therefore banned its sale. The copies already in circulation were all stripped of the title page (like the present one) and some even of the first quinterno (see G. Mira, Bibliografia siciliana ovvero gran dizionario bibliografico vol. 1, p. 240-241)2 parts in one volume, folio, (295 x 205 mm). Woodcut initials and head-pieces (lacking the title-page like the copies registered in OPAC, small wormholes at lower margin, early repairs to upper margin of last two leaves with loss of a few letters, some spotting and foxing). Contemporary full vellum binding, tittle lettered to spine and boards in manuscript (partially unbound, chipping to spine).
