[MILITARIA] FLORIANI, Pietro Paolo (1585-1638). Difesa et offesa delle piazze. Venice: Francesco Baba, 1654.
Second edition, improved and enlarged compared to the first, of this classic of Italian military treatises. It is written with much erudition, and is therefore useful not only to commanders of fortresses, but also to amateurs of ancient and modern military histories. The subject matter is illustrated by a generous number of plates, which, although englarged, nevertheless represent the objects with sufficient vivacity and expression'' (Marini). Floriani was a famous military engineer and supreme engineer of the Papal States, who designed numerous fortifications commissioned by various European sovereigns, as can be seen in Tables 1 ; 3 depicting the fortresses of Innsbruck in Austria, Altenburg in Hungary and San Germano in Piedmont.Folio, (300 x 230 mm). Copper-engraved frontispiece with portrait of the author and allegorical frontispiece, 52 numbered engraved plates in and out of text, one of which is folded several times, (light repairs to the margins of some leaves and the title page, a few light spots).
