[GESUITICA]. Histoire de Nicolas I. Roy du Paraguai, et Emperur de Mamelus. Saint Paul (ma Germany): s.e., 1764.
First edition of this fascinating work of fiction that narrates Nicolas Roubiouni's ascension to the throne of the principality of Paraguay by raising the indigenous people, slaves, and commoners against the European rulers. It is a satire against the Jesuits and their work of evangelising the natives, which undermined the economic interests of the great nobility and landowners who were hindered from expanding their possessions and acquiring new slaves. Nicolas's reign is a caricature of the 'Jesuit state' in Paraguay, the system of 'reducciones de indios' that had allowed the Guaran people to live in semi-autonomy and which were barbarously destroyed when Spain ceded their lands to the Portuguese in 1750.8vo, (164 x 94mm). Typographical title-page followed by an Avertissement du libraire warning that the work is a false one (light wear). Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt title-piece to spine (light wear). Provenance: Engraved ex-libris to endpapers, ownership inscription to title-page of Emanuel af Geijerstam (1730-1788), director of Uddeholms, a steel multinational which still exists today; ex-libris on the endpapers of the Lundsberg Skola (1896) school of Swedish royalty and nobility (1)
