[DELACROIX, MANET, COROT, COURBERT and others]. Socé?té des Aqua-Fortistes. Paris,1862-1866.
Very good copy of this scarce collection of etchings by French authors including works by Delacroix (Juive d'Alger 171, Arabes D'Oran 197, Un forgeron 290) Manet (Les Gitanos 4, Lola de Valence 67), Corot (Souvenir d'Italie 38, Environs de Rome 211, Paysage D'Italie 246), Courbet (Les Demoiselles de Village 242) and Meryon (Ministere de la Marine 176). Founded on the initiative of the publisher Alfred Cadart, the Soci?tà des aquafortistes aimed to revive etching, which had slowly been replaced by the cheaper burin and lithography. Among the first participants in the association were the Barbizon painters, who helped to raise the medium to new heights, but over 100 leading French artists contributed to the 300 engravings. With the publication of the last volume in 1867, the society was dissolved due to high costs and modest commercial success, but new experiments soon emerged: F?licien Rops, a former member, founded the Soci?tà Internationale des Aquafortistes in December 1869 in Brussels, The Portfolio was founded in London in 1870, the magazine 'Paris ? l'eau-forte' in Paris in 1873 and the Society of Painter-Etchers in London in 1880. An important collective work for the revival of etching that brought together the leading French artists of the period.5 volumes, Folio, (555 x 380mm). Engraved title-pages to each volume, accompanying texts at the opening and final indexes to the plates, 299 (of 300) etchings (Plate 135 of the third volume by Charles Chaplin les colombes is missing, probably due to censorship) protected by tissue papers, with the addition of two plates: Plate 146 La mort du chat Murre by Fernando II of Portugal (1816-1885) is present in duplicate with the version before numbering between plates 140-141; an added plate by Jules de Goncourt la lecture between plats 282-283 of volume 5 (plate 165 browned).
