First edition of one of the most artistically accurate anatomical atlases ever produced. The drawings were made around 1618 by the great Baroque painter Pietro da Cortona but were published for the first time in this Roman edition by Gaetano Petrioli, Vittorio Emanuele II's doctor; plates I-XIX and XXVII are by Pietro da Cortona while the other 7 are copied by other artists. The copy is missing plate 27, depicting the only female body in the collection and possibly omitted for censorship.Folio, (430 x 310mm). Vignette to title-page, 26 plates (of 27, missing plate 27, small marginal wormhole to last two leaves without touching text, small tears to lower margin of plates 7,8 and 15, more extensive to plates 13 and 14 repaired at back with modern scotch tape without loss of engraving, a few browned text pages, light marginal dampstaining). Contemporary full leather binding with title on cartouche on boards, gilt title and decoration on spine (some wear). Provenance: on the back of some of the leaves contemporary Vatican stamp of Bai 2.
