D'AGUILON, François (1567-1617). Opticorum libri sex. Antwerp: Officina Plantiniana, 1613.
Original edition of one of the most important treatises on optics that not only synthesises all knowledge on the subject, from Euclid to Kepler, but also contains the first discussion of the stereoscopic process (a term coined by D'Aguilon himself), one of the first presentations of the red-yellow-blue colour system and the first published description of the oréptera (a curve used for the study of binocular vision and in astronomy). The work is enhanced by the refined vignettes engraved by Theodor Galle on drawings by Rubens at the opening of each chapter. The colour system of François d'Aguilon in 1613 is believed to be the oldest system to use red, yellow, and blue (Burchett, A Bibliographic History of the study and use of colour from Aristotle to Kandinsky, p. 19).Folio, (342 x 215mm). Engraved allegorical title-page, numerous diagrams in the text, 6 engraved vignettes at the opening of each chapter, printer's device to final leaf (lacking half-title, and two leaves of index, 3P1 and 3P2, last few leaves restored with Japanese paper, occasional light browning). Rebacked contemporary binding with restorations to hinges, spine label lettered in manuscript, blue edges, 4 modern leather ties (some light wear). Provenance: old faded ownerhsip inscription to title-page . (1)
