First edition, a handsomely bound copy of this work following the vogue for encyclopaedic publications in the second half of the 18th century. Also included in the lot is the second edition of the same work, which together provide an iconographic apparatus of over 700 plates of sculptures, costumes, monuments, and furnishings relating to the civil, daily and military life of the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and other ancient peoples.3 parts in two volumes, 4to, (292 x 207mm). Illustrated title-page to the first volume and portrait of the author on the frontispiece to the second volume, 362 engraved plates (light and scattered browning, the plates are inserted in the text and not separately as reported in OPAC). Contemporary full leather binding with gilt title-piece to spines, gilt decoration to boards and turn-ins, gilt edges (light wear, joints weakened).
