Copy with armorial binding of John Stuart 3rd Earl of Bute, British Prime Minister under George III and founder and first president of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. The work is a classic of 18th century antiquarian bibliography and is considered the masterpiece of the author, a celebrated French archaeologist and antiquarian as well as a member of several academies. Although lacking 20 plates, which were not included at the time of binding, the over 700 engravings represent a rich repertoire of Roman, Greek and Celtic art.6 volumes, (without the 7th supplementary volume published posthumously), (249 x 195mm). Frontispieces to each volume, one unnumbered and 709 numbered plates and one unnumbered (of 729 plates, missing plates 37-57 of the second volume, never inserted), several vignettes in the text, half-titles ( some browning, some foxing and occasional staining). Contemporary full leather binding with the coat of arms of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792) with gilt title and decoration on spine, red edges (boards of volumes sometimes detached, some wear).
