A ROYAL PROVENANCE EMBROIDERED SILK FRINGED BLANKET, CHINA, QING DYNASTY, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY
A finely embroidered red silk blanket, supposed Cantonese manufacture, the reverse lined with green silk, edged with red silk fringes. The cover woven predominantly in polychrome satin stitch, with an exuberant design of a centred medallion and a rim with figures and pavilions with motifs of butterflies, flowers and four canton baskets in the corners; the blanket has been preserved in its wood black and gold chinoiserie lacquered box with key hole and key. In perfect conditions, no holes, no missing fringes, only a fraying of the silk in the corner of 5 cm circa, due to the weight of the pendants used to keep the cover still; curved box lid and a few wears on the surface of the lacquer.

Historical provenance note: the blanket is first of all mentioned in the original document of the Major Major and General Superintendence of the Royal House Administrative Archive III inventory, number 280: the document shows the inventory of the inheritance of S.M. the late Augusta Queen Maria Isabella of Bourbon, dated 1848, the year of her death, in the following (image of the original document showed aside pg. 78):
Una coverta di stoffa di raso cremisi con sottofodera di armesino verde, di palmi dieci per otto e mezzo, con ricca frangia di seta intorno ed interamente ricamata, con figure, fiori ed altri ornamenti in seta colorata, all'uso cinese con cassettino di legno di fondo nero con rabeschi alla cinese dorati, ducati duecento.
A cover of crimson satin fabric with underlining of armesino green, of palms ten by eight and a half, with rich silk fringe around and entirely embroidered, patterns, flowers and other ornaments in coloured silk, in Chinese use with wooden drawer on a black background with Chinese-style arabesques, two hundred ducats.
It is also mentioned in the catalogue of the exhibition held in Rome at the Praz Museum from 21 March 2008 to 29 March 2009: Naples 1836 the rooms of the Queen Mother. (image of the catalogue cover showed aside)
Note: when European traders arrived in China in the early 16th century, the woven silk industry in China was adapted to suit the taste of the Western market initially incorporating Western motifs into Chinese ones. Starting from the 17th century the textiles were specifically manufactured for the Western markets and often made to order from patterns supplied by the Western dealers.
