In the 1960s, due to the crisis in the motorcycle industry, BMW had extremely low sales volumes and was planning to abandon motorcycle construction for good. Due to the fact that Elica's motorcycles were old-fashioned in their conception and unsuitable for that age, one of the most important brands of all time was in danger of disappearing.
Instead of giving up, BMW launched a complete overhaul of its range, introducing the successful /5 series in 1968. Conceived by the team of engineers led by Eng. Hans Gunther Von der Marwitz, who developed a completely new chassis using oval tubes, this motorcycle completely revolutionised the company's image. Never out of style, always fresh and of great impact on the public, the /5 was able to keep up the best tradition of the Bavarian twin-cylinder: tireless travellers, they were particularly appreciated for the classic line and their satisfactory performance.
Introduced as an entry-level model, the R 50/5 offered the best of the range, making it appealing to all those nostalgic for the half-litre. With 30 horsepower and a look virtually identical to that of its older sisters, it was immediately a balanced and characterful bike, just like its older siblings.
This 1973 model was built by BMW in February 1973 and is one of the last R 50/5s built by BMW. Purchased by its first owner, an enthusiast from the province of Padua, it was used regularly until it was sold to its current owner about 10 years ago. The bike has covered a distance of about 88,000 km, considered original, and has rarely been used in recent years. Now, it has some slight defects as it hasn’t been used for several years, but it won’t take much to bring it back to its original splendour.
After a tuning of the mechanical parts, this solid bike will give immense satisfaction to its next owner.
