In 1974, Volkswagen was focused on the production of the classic golf when two of its employees, Konrad and Lowenberg, suggested designing a sports model. The idea was immediately discarded. However, the two did not give up and, outside of working hours and on weekends, dedicated themselves to designing a car that would be good for shopping but at the same time comfortable on the track. They assembled a real team and when they proposed to the Board of Directors their idea of a sober but sporty car, they immediately obtained their approval. The only limit imposed on them was the number of units to be produced, which should not exceed 5,000. Finally, in 1975, the Golf GTI, an acronym of Gran Turismo Iniezione, was presented at the Frankfurt show. Contrary to all predictions, this concentration of sportsmanship quickly became one of the most coveted and iconic cars of all time.
This car was compact and light, with a sporty set-up. The powerful Audi 80GTE engine was a 1.6-cylinder, 4 or 5-speed front-wheel drive 4 or 5-speed transmission. The bodywork was made more gritty by the oversized spoiler and wheel arches, the honeycomb ventilation grilles and the unmistakable red mars grille whisker. The interior was also designed for sporty trim, with the three-spoke steering wheel, Scottish fabric seats and the unmistakable gear knob in the shape of a golf ball.
The car we offer for auction is a magnificent example of the 1979 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 with a black 5-speed gearbox in a two-headlamp configuration, original Karmann steering wheel, original and preserved wheels. Its interior (dashboard, sky, seats, etc. ...) is all perfectly preserved in the original fabric with Tartan pattern. The car was registered for the first time in Ferrara in 1979 and then it was re-registered in 1988 in Modena for a change of province. Since then it has not changed plates. Over the years, some maintenance and restoration works have been carried out, which is why today it presents itself in amazing conditions. Specifically, about 4 years ago it was repainted externally (of its original black colour). About two years ago, a major maintenance work was carried out on some areas of the car such as the exhaust system, brakes, fuel pump, radiator, etc... only with Volkswagen Classic parts, all properly documented by invoices. Today, the car is in impeccable condition from all points of view. It was checked in June 2020, all the liquids have been replaced, and finally the battery has been changed. The car is now ready to make another enthusiast of the GTI myth fall in love.
