A PAIR OF BLACK; LACQUERED AND GOLDEN PAINTED WOOD CHAIRS, CHINA, QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY (2)
Each with a slightly slender S-form back enclosing a hardwood seat above shaped aprons, the legs of squared section joined by stretchers. They are painted overall in a black lacquer, with a finely gilded motif of scrolling flowers and the S-shaped panel decorated with Buddhist symbols as a paired fish shuangyu*, Jade musical stone qing* and bats fù*, the gilded design on a red base ; the latter showing through in parts to create a three-colour design and deepness. Losses on the lacquer and surface wear in the gilding decoration, more pronounced in the seat and shoulder areas of both chairs, some small pieces of wood lost and pieces of ornaments re stuck.
