L'ECLUSE, Charles (1526-1609). Rariorum plantarum historia. Antwerp: Plantin, 1601.
First edition of L'Ecluse's work on European plants, likely belonging to a scholar at the University of Leiden. In particular, the work laid the foundations of the Dutch tulip bulb industry thanks to the meticulous descriptions of the cultivation of specimens that L'Ecluse had planted and observed; The section devoted tulips is densely annotated in this copy, which, combined with the transcription of an amicable epigraph from L'Ecluse to Justus Lipsius of which no printed copies are known, suggests that the copy belongs to a botanist, perhaps a pupil of L'Ecluse's, from Leiden University.
Folio, (345 x 220 mm). Numerous woodcuts in the text, woodcut initials and head-pieces. (Allegorical title page trimmed, preserving only the title and typographical indications, mounted on contemporary blank leaf, lightly browned, light occasional stains, a small wormhole to the last three leaves without touching text). Contemporary carta rustica binding, title on spine. Provenance: several contemporary marginal annotations, especially in the section on tulips and flowers; to the verso of leaf bb6 at the end of the section on mushrooms is an epigram by Clusius to Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) in contemporary handwriting from the familiar epigrams preserved in a codex at the University of Leiden. (Universiteitbibliotheek BPL1). It is therefore plausible that this copy was annotated within Leiden University circles that had access to the papers of Lipsius and Clusius, probably a student of the latter.. (1
