Beautiful atlas with contemporary colouring, produced for the young cadets of the Royal Military School of Paris. Seven plates illustrate armillary spheres, 59 are world maps including three planispheres and 15 are devoted to the regions of France. Each plate is set in an engraved frame and has an applied printed text of description on its sides, usually with astronomical observations by Tchirikow and Delisle and historical and geographical descriptions by Maclot.
Folio, (405 x 310mm). Double-page engraved title page, 65 double-page maps in contemporary colouring with rich allegorical intaglio frames and printed legends applied to the margins on brackets, numbered 1-50 dedicated to the World and 1-15 dedicated to France (complete, map 23 with light staining, some foxing). Contemporary binding in full leather, spine gilt (some wear and chipping mainly at joints). (1
