The Fiat 508 Balilla is a car that made Italian motoring history. Simple, reliable and above all affordable for a wider public, it was one of the cars that led Italy towards mass motorization. Its simplicity, reliability and ease of construction were the result of great design consistency on the part of Fiat's engineers at the time. Its compact 995 cc 20 horsepower engine gave this important hatchback a top speed of 80 km/h, while the chassis with side members allowed the Balilla to be offered in a variety of configurations.
Presented mainly as a saloon, Fiat also offered the Balilla as a truck, van and Spider. The 'top of the range' was the celebrated 'Coppa d'Oro' Sport Spider, so named for its victory in the Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti. Obviously there were also versions dedicated to the army and Carabinieri. The Spider was the 'touring' version, aimed more at driving pleasure than pure practicality.
Thanks to its affordable price and Fiat's creation of an effective economy of scale, 112,000 examples of the 508 Balilla were built in five years, until it was replaced by the 508C 'Nuova Balilla', with a more profiled body and 1100 hp engine.
This 1932 Balilla Spider is offered here as a restoration project. Chassis number 1474 suggests that it is one of the earliest chassis built, probably between May and June. It is known of this car that it was delivered new to Argentina and spent most of its life overseas. It was imported to Italy no less than 30 years ago by the previous owner, an Argentine enthusiast. An examination revealed that it was fitted with the 4-speed gearbox of the later series and a 1935 body. The current owner has undertaken the restoration of the mechanics and bodywork, restoring the wood, canvas and chrome parts. A good restoration project for any pre-war car enthusiast, this Fiat 508 Balilla provides an excellent basis for restoring one of Fiat's icons.
