A star called Sassicaia

Tenuta San Guido is a symbol of Italian excellence in the world. Its founder, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, can be considered the father of modern oenology. He brought to Italy the same production method used for French chateaux: wines that are made with attention to every detail, from the planting of the vines, to the ripening of the grapes and the bottling process.

At the beginning of the 1920s, the Marquis had the intuition to plant cabernet vine shoots in the gravelly soil of the Maremma, and in time he realised that by squeezing the fruit from these plants he obtained an excellent wine that improved as it aged. The first vintage to be put on the market was 1968, and from that moment on, the turning point.

Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, son of the far-sighted Marquis Mario, today continues the family tradition: a wine production that is not at all an industrial process, but a sophisticated action that produces a few grapes but quality.

The DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, produced in 250 thousand bottles a year, is not only the valuable result of a process of pressing and fermentation, but at the same time a concentrate of history, tradition and innovation.

The Wine and Spirits web-only auction, open until 18 May, features 7 bottles from 1995 (lot 173, estimated value € 800 – €1,200).
