In 1957, in order to cope with the oil crisis, BMC (British Motor Corporation) asked Alec Issigonis to design a modern utility car that was also economical. The goal he set himself was to design a model that was 3-meter long and 1-meter wide, without sacrificing its habitability, which had to comfortably accommodate four people, and the capacity of the trunk. In order to succeed in this, he was forced to find solutions that were revolutionary for the time, such as the 4-cylinder engine, already used for the Austin A35, which was mounted in a transverse front position with the gearbox underneath it, and the traction that became front. To make the whole balanced and elegant, he decided to mount the 10-inch wheels and suspension with rubber elements, which served to dampen the stress transmitted to the bodywork by these exceptionally small wheels. The first model presented with the Austin and Morris brands was the Mini Minor 850. Over the years, the Mini underwent several modifications and the models followed with continuous success.
Despite its great appeal, many states considered the Mini to be a luxury car due to the high import costs. So it was that the Innocenti had a winning intuition and obtained the license to produce the Mini in the Lambrate factory in 1965. These cars were very different from their English sisters. The interiors were more accessorised and finished and the exteriors had been modified to house the Italian square plates. Also for the mechanics, some different choices were made, like the one to insert the brake booster on all models. In 1972, the production of Mini Cooper 1300 started. In this model, the hinges of the doors were no more external, the front doors had deflectors, the shock absorbers were no more hydrolastic, but with rubber cones. On the outside, it was easily recognisable thanks to the black plastic front grille.
The car we offer for auction is a splendid example of the 1966 Innocenti Mini Cooper Mk2, number 170° of the Innocenti production, in its classic midnight blue colour with white roof and beige leatherette interior. The car had only three owners (but two of them are brother and sister, so the same family until 2016). When the third owner bought it in 2016, he immediately decided to restore it. The bodywork was checked, repainted in its original colour, with the application of the anti-noise protection in the critical areas. The interior is original and almost completely preserved (except for the sky, which has been entirely redone). The engine has been completely restored improving it in some parts, (the alternator has been installed instead of the dynamo and the stabiliser which are anyway supplied as car parts by the seller included in the price) a more performing exhaust has been installed instead of its original exhaust (anyway supplied as car parts by the seller included in the price). The original suspensions have been replaced with more modern and effective ones (the original Hydrolastic suspensions are supplied as spare parts by the seller included in the price). At present, the car is fitted with sports rims (but its original rims are supplied as spare parts by the seller included in the price). The car is also supplied with the original tool bag, the triple wrenches, and the tripmaster system already assembled (the car is prepared for regularity races). The seller also offers a dashboard equipped for regularity races. Equipped with ASI certification and Gold Plate n.43316. With its original 62,000 km is ready to go, just turn the key.
