TASTE AND STYLE OF A HOTEL PARTICULIER
The furniture and works in this catalogue (lots 1-298) are the achievement of the tastes and culture of a great Italian family which, having moved to Brussels, pursued its quest for further artistic enrichment through a wider knowledge of the world surrounding it. It at once becomes apparent that this particular approach to the world of art was undertaken against a backdrop of sheer elegance. It could not have been undertaken in any other way, especially when one considers the important role in Belgian society that the family was called upon to perform in its new residence.
Apart from the social aspect, however, one is able to sense the constant search for a sophisticated style of comfort within the collection, along with the desire to live to the full the personal adventures of each and every member of the clan, adventures that were set against those objects that surrounded the family throughout its daily life.
Interest in such a collection is further enhanced by the evident importance of many considerably significant works: the beautiful collection of Neapolitan gouaches and the gilt console in the form of a doplhin are two exceptional examples. There are also collections of hard stones, mosaic boxes, refined maiolicas and a selection of Oriental objects.
In all, the collection is a fascinating testimony to the elegance and cosmopolitan style of Italian taste.
