Old Masters Paintings

by Antonio Gesino

A highly balanced ratio between the quality of the works and the evaluation of their true market value has produced excellent results for the Department of Old Masters. Overall, in the last three auctions the Department has achieved a total of 2,761,822 euro, the second highest figure after the one for Furnishings and Decorative Arts, with a percentage of lots sold of 62.9% and 114.8% in terms of value. The top lot for 2015 was the Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew by Luca Giordano dated 1690 and sold for the figure of 272,800 euro. Two tempera on wood by the Florentine, Ventura di Moro – most definitely one of the most significant personalities from the Late Gothic period – featuring Saints Catherine and Saints, achieved a hammer price of 248,000 euro and two delicate Venetian paintings featuring an Allegory of Geometry and an Allegory of Geography attributed to Girolamo da Santacroce (active in the Veneto during the first part of the 16th century) were sold for 148,800 euro.
