Nuvolo: New York – Milano

by Guido Wannenes

As I write this article the first solo exhibition that the United States has dedicated to Nuvolo (real name Giorgio Ascani) is being inaugurated in New York at the Di Donna Galleries. The exhibition, entitled Nuvolo: 1950 – 1965, has been curated by Germano Celant and represents an opportunity to look deeper at the art period in Rome after the Second World War, a period that turned the city into a hotbed of young artists like Burri, Colla, Capogrossi and – indeed – Nuvolo, who, in those years experimented his serigraphy, deer skin and chessboard techniques.
We felt therefore that we had to dedicate our cover story to this very artist (from Città di Castello in Umbria) with an article written by Bruno Corà and focusing on two works that are going under the hammer in our November auction in Milan: Deer from 1959 and Machine Sewn from 1960.
The Magazine continues with its Istantanee dedicated to the Sixteenth Century in Florence, to Lucio Fontana and to Caravaggio, with further articles by Roberta Olcese on the V-A-C Foundation in Moscow and by Alessandro Secciani who is betting on the United States…despite Mr Trump!
Furthermore, as proof that all of this creative ferment whipped up by Nuvolo is even beginning to characterise us we would like to take the opportunity to extend a warm welcome to Giuseppe Calabi who will be contributing to the Magazine with a new column entitled The Law of Art, from this issue onwards.
Timothy Verdon and Lucia Borromeo will be accompanying us, respectively, to the New Museum of the Opera del Duomo in Florence – recognised as possessing one of the most innovative museum structures of the Twenty-first Century – and to Villa Necchi Campiglio, a hidden jewel in the centre of Milan. Last of all, Tomaso Montanari will be offering us a wholly contemporary look at the relationship between jus soli and the history of art.
The previews range from the silverware made for the wedding service of Prince William of Prussia to the porcelain of Doccia and Meissen. Added to this the previews will be covering the influences of Caravaggio in Neapolitan painting, the gentle pastel shades created by Antonio Mancini and the 1950’s in Italian art seen through the works of Morlotti and Munari, as well as the Kosmo armchair by Rito Valle for IPE. Our furniture auctions (one of the most successful sectors in the first part of the year) will be including a selection of works of the utmost quality with – alongside two extraordinary Piranesi console tables – one of the masterpieces of Gregorio di Lorenzo.
As far as jewellery is concerned, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari and Rolex are only a few of the big names in our forthcoming auction, with a viewing also in Milan from November 21st to the 22nd at the Hotel Principe di Savoia.
As testament to the central importance of the city of Milan for our auction house – now and in the future – I am delighted to welcome Benedetta Gallizia as our new Associate in Milan.
