Magritte is in Milan

di Guido Wannenes

René Magritte was one of the masters of surrealism and his Le Civilisateur – which we will be auctioned on December 12 in Milan – is a delightful example of his visionary genius.Published in the artist’s catalogue raisonné and jealously guarded in a private collection for more than forty years, the work represents the culmination of a sale that will include the best of Italian and international artistic production of the 20th century.

The calendar for the second half of the year is particularly rich in auctions on the Milan, Genoa and Monte Carlo axis.

Gianguido Scarampella’s collection, our first Classic & Sports Cars, elegant court dresses, a marvellous coral chalice are just the first appointments of a season that will continue with the baroque light of Sebastiano Ricci and Paolo Gerolamo Piola, a rediscovered wax by Vincenzo Gemito, Fernand Leger and his Composition à la pipe, the fantasy in power in a double body by Sottsass and two precious inventions by Bulgari and Cartier.
In addition, after the inauguration in May of the Milanese headquarters of Palazzo Recalcati, in December it will be the turn of the headquarters for design in Genoa. Two new experts joined our team: Luigi Chiaramonte Bordonaro for Classic & Sports Cars and Giacomo Cora for table and wrist watches.

The company is growing, the team is growing as are the horizons that we set ourselves, as shown by the first auction of Wine & Spirits in partnership with Gambero Rosso, which was held in Rome on October 24 and generated 71% of sales per lot and over 320,000 euros in turnover.

Finally, the auctions held in July in Monaco proved to be very successful, recording a world record price for Raul du Gardier and one of our highest ever awards – 2,976,000 euros – for an extraordinary pair of earrings with cashmere sapphires.

In short, Magritte is in Milan but…it’s not only
