Inside Caravaggio, the form of reality

Milan is the city which, in 1951, first paid homage to Caravaggio at the Royal Palace with a legendary exhibition curated by Roberto Longhi. This was an exhibition which brought back the name of the painter into the Pantheon of history’s immortal painters. Now, in the same place, until January 28th 2018, eighteen of the artist’s masterpieces will be gathered together for the first time.
The exhibition, “Dentro Caravaggio”, promoted and produced by the City Council of Milan (Cultural Section), the Royal Palace and Skira (in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Bracco Diagnosis Group) is curated by Rossella Vodret who has been assisted by a highly prestigious scientific committee presided by Keith Christiansen. The project will seek to tell the story of the painter’s extraordinary artistic production from a new viewpoint and through two new and yet fundamental interpretations: diagnostic examinations and restoration work undertaken as well as new documentary research which has enabled experts to reconsider the chronology of the painter’s early works.
The forms of reality which, in Caravaggio’s works, have roots in the Naturalism of Nordic and Leonardeques styles, will appear more “real” and “contemporary” to us since action becomes a catharsis between body and soul and chaos and order. Through this reality Caravaggio translates the “word” into form and colour which, thanks to his masterful use of light, appear wholly modern to us.
