Ceramics & Glasses

by Luca Melegati

The refined selective quality of the Department of Porcelain and Glass enjoyed, yet again in 2015, consistent interest on behalf of a clientele of authentic connoisseurs who enjoy collecting pieces in an almost encyclopaedic fashion; pieces from the great manufactories that over the years have transformed this particular category into an antique collecting classic. The absolute protagonist last year was an important and large polychrome group featuring “Ganymede and the Eagle”, from the years 1760 to 1770. The work may be attributed to Gaspero Bruschi and derives from the bronze group from 1717 by Massimiliano Soldani Benzi, now at Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum – it sold for 25,482 euro. Among works from a collection of Southern Italian majolicas there was an oval vase from the workshop of Sciacca from the 16th to the 17th centuries, decorated with the figure of Mary Magdalene – it sold for 10,540 euro.
