BOCCACCIO, Giovanni (1313-1375). Le Decameron. Paris: Estienne Roffet, 1548.
Fine bound copy of this scarce first illustrated French edition of Antoine Le Maçon's translation, with only three recorded auction appearances in the last 30 years (RBH). Le Maçon, advisor to the king and treasurer of war, translated the Decameron from Italian into French to please Marguerite de Navarre, who was known for her love of literature. The translation, completed for the Queen, was first published by Roffet in 1545.
8vo, (170 x 105 mm). 10 full-page engraved illustrations, title within elegant engraved frame, engraved initials and headpieces (some light foxing). Mid-19th century full morocco binding richly gilt decorated on the boards and spine, gilt edges and decorated with inlays, in the style of Riviere. Provenance: French antiquarian bookseller card from the beginning of the 20th century. (1)
