[BINDING] ERASMUS, Desiderius (1446-1536). Epistolarum opus complectens universas.. Basel: Froben; Episcopius, 1558.
Splendid binding from the library of Duke Ludwig III of Württemberg (1554-1593) with his portrait impressed on the first board and the arms on the second. This work is the fourth edition of the Letters of Erasmus of Rotterdam, originally published in 1538 and enriched with new prefaces and correspondences. This expanded version includes 1231 letters divided into 28 books.
Folio, (320 x 225mm). Printer's device to title page and colophon, a few antique notes and underlining (signature formerly obliterated to title page). Contemporary pigskin binding richly blindstamped on the boards and spine, portrait of Duke Ludwig der Fromme Herzog von Württemberg on the front board and his emblem on the back, both within a multiply menandered frame decorated with clypeus depicting philosophers (including Erasmus). Provenance: Ludwig III of Württemberg; 'Ioannes Grarbig (or Crarbig) iure me possidet ann. salut 1595' ownership inscription on the title page, and initials and year of purchase printed on the front board; 'Antonii de Cecco' antique ownership inscription on the colophon.
