BENIVIENI, Girolamo (1453-1549). Commento...sopra a più sue canzone et sonetti dello amore et della belleza diuina. Florence: Tubini, Antonio; Alopa, Lorenzo; Ghirlandi, Andrea, 1500.
First comprehensive edition of Benivieni's love works and songs, dedicated to Giovan Francesco Pico, grandson of Pico della Mirandola. Famous for containing the first printed eyewitness account of the famous 'bruciamento', the Savonarola Carnival bonfire of the vanities of 7 February 1497, the collection includes a song (fol. oo6r-oo7r) with a detailed list of the 'lascivious, vain and detestable objects' thrown into the fire: paintings, musical instruments, female ornaments, worth 'more than a thousand ducats'. In his youth, Benivieni was an esteemed court poet under the protection of the Medici, and his friendship with Giovanni Pico had a profound influence on his poetics. Towards the end of the fifteenth century, and especially after the death of his friend and master, he joined the pious movement of Savonarola, radically transforming his style: from secular love to an intense religious dimension, as his spiritual laudi and translations of Savonarola's texts show. Although he rejected the youthful verses for their 'lascivious and sensual' tone, Benivieni published this commentary on one hundred of his poems, reworked to reflect the spiritual fervour that animated him. It is a work of Petrarchan inspiration and Platonic-Savonarola reinterpretation.
