ANDREINI, Giovanni Battista (1578-1650). L'adamo sacra rapresentatione. Milan: Geronimo Bordoni, 1613.
Scarce first edition in beautiful binding of one of the most important works of seventeenth-century theatre. The plot, inspired by the biblical story, is enriched by extravagances and spectacular sets, reproduced in engravings by Bassano, depicting scenes from Genesis and spectacular flights of devils and monsters. The author, son of the famous actors Francesco and Isabella Andreini, performed with great success in Paris under the name of Leylio and became a favourite of Louis XIII. It is believed that Milton witnessed one of these performances during his travels in Italy and was inspired to write Paradise Lost.
