SALVETTI ACCIAIOLI, Maddalena (1557-1610). Rime toscane...In lode della serenissima signora Cristina di Loreno gran duchessa di Toscana. Florence: Tosi, 1590.
Scarce first edition, never sold at auction (RBH) of this encomiastic poem in honour of Christina of Lorraine and Grand Duke Ferdinand I, to celebrate their marriage. The work, in line with the Counter-Reformation, exalts the religious and salvific character of the Grand Ducal power; to praise Cristina, the tradition of Dante and Petrarch is taken up, adapted with a female voice and invoking God as a guide; the Grand Duchess is thus made an exceptional being on a par with Beatrice, while the myth of Daphne is used to exalt chastity and that of the Golden Age to glorify Ferdinand as a bringer of peace. The rhymes consolidated Salvetti's fame, so much so that Cornelio Lanci dedicated a play to her in homage to her poetic skill, La Niccolosa, printed by Sermartelli in Florence in 1591.
