POZZO DE ZORZI, Modesta (1555-1592). Il merito delle donne...Oue chiaramente si scuopre quanto siano elle degne, e piu perfette de gli huomini. Venice: Imberti, 1600.
First edition never sold at auction (RBH) of this posthumously published work by the celebrated Venetian poetess. It is a dialogue between seven Venetian women who meet to freely discuss the condition of women and their relations with men. Each character represents a typical situation in female life, from the young bride to the widow and the unmarried intellectual, allowing for a varied and critical examination of the limitations imposed by the male gender. The group explores the idea of an autonomous and happy life, but also the difficult emotional bond that makes them 'voluntary slaves' to men, without finding definitive answers. The second day is marked by digressions on topics such as astrology and medicine, and concludes with a call for greater male understanding, reflecting the difficulties of emancipation in this period.
