MARINELLI, Lucrezia (1571-1653). L'Enrico, ouero Bisantio acquistato, poema heroico. Venice: Imberti, 1635.
First edition of this epic poem in twenty-seven cantos, which recounts the Fourth Crusade and the conquest of Byzantium by Venice. The work is notable for its strong pro-feminist tone and features female characters who challenge the traditional roles of the time, including the warrior Claudia. Marinelli is also famous for La nobiltà e l'eccellenza delle donne (The Nobility and Excellence of Women), a philosophical work in which she defends the intellectual and moral superiority of women against the misogyny of her time. Considered a pioneer, the author is one of the few women who successfully ventured into the epic genre in the 17th century; in fact, only five epic poems by women are known to have been printed between 1560 and 1650.
