MAGGI, Vincenzo (1498-1564). Un brieve trattato dell'eccellentia delle donne...Vi si è poi aggiunto un'essortatione a gli huomini perché non si lascino superar dalle donne. Brescia: Turlini, 1545.
Bookseller Giuseppe Martini's copy of a treatise on female nature based on Aristotelian and Galenic theories. Maggi overturns the idea that women's 'cold and wet' nature is a sign of inferiority, arguing instead that this complexion makes them more temperate and virtuous. While drawing on many of the clichés of the time, the work offers an analysis of passions and temperamental excesses with interesting psychological insights.
