Florence: Giunta, 1552.
In the context of widespread sexist polemics in the sixteenth century, Bruni's work opposes the slanders traditionally directed at the female sex. Bruni demolishes the accusations of writers such as Aristotle and St Jerome, arguing that women, far from being inferior, possess moral and intellectual virtues equal to those of men. The text takes the form of a veritable apologia for women, intended to counter the prevailing male prejudices of the time.
