AGOSTINI, Leonardo (1593-1669). Le gemme antiche figurate. Rome: [Dragondelli], 1657.
First edition of this important work, which reproduces the prestigious collection of Cardinal Francesco Barberini in over two hundred refined engraved plates by Giovanni Battista Galestruzzi. The description and cataloguing of the pieces was carried out by Leonardo Agostini, who in 1655 was appointed commissioner for the antiquities of Rome and Lazio and who sponsored numerous archaeological excavations in the capital. An esteemed numismatist, Agostini is best remembered for his studies of glyptics, to which this work is particularly related.

Engraved title page, portrait of the author and 214 plates numbered 1-214 (without the 4 unnumbered plates mentioned by OPAC but which do not appear in the digitised copy, light spotting). Early 19th century English leather binding with gilt title and gilt title to spine, blindstamped on boards, red boards (some wear and chipping). Provenance: 'TB' initials to title page; Label of the Soviet bookseller Mogiz (or Kogiz, Moscow department of the book trade association of state publishing houses of the USSR, active between 1929 and 1949).
