ZAYDLER, Bernard (1799-1855). Storia della Polonia fino agli ultimi tempi. Florence: Batelli, 1831.
The only edition of this richly illustrated history of Poland by the jurist and historian Bernard Zaydler, a member of the Royal Polish Society of Friends of Science. The plates, mainly by the Italian engraver Antonio Verico, depict traditional costumes and urban views, especially squares and monuments of Warsaw and its surroundings, as well as historical and battle scenes, such as the Siege of Vienna in 1683 and the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. Portraits include emblematic illustrations from Polish history, including Kings John III Sobieski and Casimir III the Great, as well as the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Included are two maps of Warsaw and Cracow and two folding, hand-coloured maps of Eastern Europe showing the geographical situation of Poland before the first partition in 1772 and its state in 1831.
