FORREST, Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Ramus (1750-1827). A Picturesque Tour along the Rivers Ganges and Jumna, in India. London: R. Ackermann, 1824.
Copy with plates in good condition of this first edition of an important work on the iconography of the Indian subcontinent. Forrest's views are striking in their detail and excellent execution, examples include the Taj Mahal and the King's Palace in Delhi, which accurately capture the atmosphere of Indian scenes as they might have appeared to an early 19th century European traveller.
Folio, (395 x 310mm). 24 aquatint plates in fine contemporary colouring by G. Hunt and T. Sutherland from Forrest's drawings on '1822' watermarked paper, aquatint vignette on last text plate, text printed on '1824' watermarked paper (map and list of plates missing, title page with aquatint vignette replaced with a later printed title page bearing the date 1822 without illustrations, probably made in the late 19th century). Second half of the 19th century morocco binding with gilt title and decoration to spine (some light wear). (1)
